The Importance of Well Care Visits

Well-care visits start at birth and continue throughout your child's entire childhood. The best reason for these visits is to prevent your child from getting serious illnesses. While your child is an infant and a toddler, these visits will be more frequent. 

Infants up to one year

The first visit your child will have with their pediatrician is usually between 3 and 5 days of age, but it may go as far out as two weeks after hospital discharge. At this visit, the baby's weight, length, and head circumference will be checked, parents will be questioned about how feeding is going and bowel movements. Don't be afraid to ask questions or raise any concerns you may have. 

After this first visit, the visits recommended are 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months. During these visits, your infant will begin their vaccination schedule. Your baby's weight and height will be checked; heart and lungs, vision and hearing, reflexes, and musculoskeletal system. Their development will also be checked to make sure they are meeting expected milestones. You should be aware of the major milestones so that if you notice any delays you can discuss them with your pediatrician. Bring a list of any questions you may have about concerns you may have. 

13 months to 2 years

During this second year, most of the physical exams will remain the same and immunizations will continue, but the visits will not be quite as frequent. The usual schedule is 15 months, 18 months, and two years. This is the usual schedule for well-care visits in Sacramento, CA.

2-3 years

During this period there will be one additional visit at 2.5 years. It is a time to check growth and development. More immunizations and an opportunity for you to discuss any concerns you may have. 

4-18 years

During these years, the yearly visit will mostly be about growth and health. Vaccinations will continue on the recommended schedule.
