You may not really think about skin conditions when you consider what your child can suffer from but with the skin being the largest organ there is a lot of area that can be affected. Pediatric dermatology can treat skin conditions and in Sacramento, CA that means talking to one of our pediatricians at Timberlake Pediatrics.

Diaper Dermatitis

Diaper rash is a type of contact dermatitis usually resulting from contact with urine or feces. There are other types of rash in the diaper area that may require different types of treatment. It can be caused by allergies, bacteria, and yeast. All of them will respond to frequent diaper changes, taking the diaper off and letting the diaper area stay uncovered. Talk to your pediatrician, different types of diaper rash require different types of cream to treat them.

Eczema

When children develop eczema it is usually atopic dermatitis. Eczema can be very itchy and small children can make things worse by scratching, so it is important to take precautions with that. It can not be cured, but there are things that can be done.  Having a customized skin care plan, which may include moisturizers, prescription medications, and strategies to eliminate triggers is the best approach for skin conditions in Sacramento, CA.

Impetigo

Impetigo causes sores and can be painful. It is an infection and is contagious. It is treated with antibiotic ointment, cream, or orally. Impetigo can spread through the family so don't share towels or other personal items. It clears up quite quickly and your child should be able to return to school or daycare within 48 hours of starting treatment.

Cradle Cap (infant seborrheic dermatitis)

Cradle cap can develop anywhere from 3 weeks to 12 months. It is scaly patches that develop on the baby's head. Most cases of cradle cap are not serious and can be treated at home with baby oil and a soft bristle baby hairbrush.

Poison Ivy

Poison ivy is an allergic reaction to poison ivy. It can be treated with lotion to reduce the itch and a prescription if necessary for more serious cases.
