Managing Fevers: Tips for Worried Parents

It can be stressful and worrisome when your child has a fever and isn’t feeling well. In that moment, there’s nothing you want more than to help your little one recover and feel better. Fortunately, there are several things you can do at home to manage and reduce your child’s fever. At Timberlake Pediatrics in Sacramento, CA, our experienced pediatrician is here to help when your child has a fever or other symptoms.

Tips for Reducing Fevers

Children often experience discomfort, chills, and other symptoms when they have a fever, which can be worrisome for parents. As scary as a fever might be, though, it is a sign that your child’s immune system is functioning properly and working hard to fight off infection. The good news is there are things you can do to manage your little one’s fever.

Some steps you can take at home to bring down your child’s fever include:

  • Over-the-counter fever-reducing medications (e.g., acetaminophen)
  • Applying a cool compress to the forehead
  • Soaking in a bath of lukewarm water
  • Drinking fluids to stay hydrated
  • Wearing lightweight clothing
  • Getting plenty of rest

When to See a Pediatrician

It is always beneficial to contact the pediatrician at our office in Sacramento, CA when your little one has developed a fever or other symptoms. The doctor can guide managing the fever and other symptoms at home, as well as determine if an in-person sick visit is needed.

There are instances when your child should see a doctor promptly, such as for a persistent or high fever. See a pediatrician in the following situations:

  • Fever is accompanied by a rash, dehydration, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Persistent fever that lasts for two or more days (even if the fever is mild)
  • 100.4°F temperature or higher for newborns and infants under 3 months
  • 102-103°F temperature or higher in children between 3 months and 1 year
  • 104°F temperature or higher in kids of any age
